  1. No, well only to view your own name on there (it will ask for date of birth).  It's considered an offence under the privacy act to look up someone else's name.  If you are looking for an old friend or something I suggest you try oldfriends.co.nz and post on their boards does anyone know where xxxxx is?  Or search for their name on there, most people I know are listed on the old friends site & you can email people who are on there.

  2. It appears not.

I've just been into the Electoral website and I can't find any links to an electoral roll.

You may wish to look at the site and see if you can find what you want.

    http://www.elections.org.nz/

Note: it is NOT an offence under the Privacy Act to look up any-one else's name in the Roll. The whole purpose of having the Rolls available at the Post offices is so the public can check not only their own names and addresses, but those of others as well.

The offence is using this information in an unlawful manner.

(The Privacy Act gets wrongly blamed for all sorts of things.)

The public Electoral Rolls are incomplete as there is a "Hidden Roll" kept at Electoral Offices and can be viewed only by Justice Dept staff.  This roll is for people who, by their standing or occupation are permitted to register in secret.

It is used by undercover Police, the SAS, people on witness protection schemes, judges and the like. I've even heard of school teachers using it.

While you do not have to vote if you don't want to (in Australia you must vote), everyone of voting age is required by law to enrol on the Electoral Roll.

  3. No you can't - but if you are in NZ you can view the electoral rolls at (most) post offices for free.

You can also buy them, they used to be about $23 years ago, don't know the price now.
