  1. You can watch a DVD on a Blu-ray player but not an HD-DVD. However, HD-DVD is being discontinued anyway so that shouldn't be a problem.

Yes you can watch standard DVD's on a Blu-Ray player.  And just to clarify, your standard DVD's will only look better on a Blu-Ray player if you use either Component video (red, green & blue) which is 480p Progressive Scan or HDMI which is 720p, 1080i or 1080p.  Just using Composite video (yellow) or S-Video from a Blu-Ray will do nothing for you.
