i might be getting a hawley retainer on my upper teeth soon, so that will mean that i have only one essix retainer on the bottom, which is pretty strong and could damage my teeth while grinding at night

  1. I have not seen a hawley retainer that would work well with a nightguard over it,  however,   your dentist should be able to suggest a combination that will hold your teeth straight like a Hawley,   yet provide some comfort for your tooth grinding as well.    Some essix retainers are stronger than others,  so ask your dentist if the type you have can withstand moderate grinding.

Perhaps Hawleys during the day,   nightguard at night.

  2. Hello....while I understand your question and your concern...what tends to worry me is that you haven't been told that gritting and grinding is more than a need for a night guard...it's an Emotional Stress problem your dealing with...and I know it's possible you haven't realized that is the issue. Emotional Stress comes from issues having to do with one or a combination of six specific areas. Those areas are Employment, Money, Marriage, Health, s*x and Self Esteem...Also, it may be you personally aren't having an issue in one of those areas, but you are having Stress because your emotionally attached to the person who is having issues in one or more of those areas...An example could be that you might have a really close friend or family member that just learned they have a terminal illness...Your learning that could trigger deep emotional stress and result in your tooth gritting and grinding...You might want to seek out a counselor and discuss the possibility...you could be stressing and not even realize where it's coming from and a good counselor can help you define the issues.  Good luck and I wish you well.

  3. I haven't seen a hawley retainer before, however I know that with any orthodontics there is a nightguard you can wear. It's basically a thick piece of plastic, but it doesn't hook onto your teeth necessarily. However, it helps with grinding of the teeth. You would have to check with your regular dentist or orthodontist to get one.
