Aboslutely, any kind of dress would be fine for the formal dinner...I have been on over 30 cruises, and there is always those couple people who dont dress up for the formal night...i think that is rude, but its just me...anything dressy is perfect...hope this helps! = ]

Yes!  In fact a short dressy dress is better than a long one because you can go out dancing and to the clubs and casino after dinner in it.  Whereas with a long one you might want to change.  I just got back from a 7 night cruise and wore a long one both nights and had to go back and change after dinner because it was too hard to walk in and dance in for late night activities.

Most 7-day cruises have two formal nights when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the ship’s Captain. The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. But most people do dress up in a tux for men and a long dress (any color) for women. Some men just wear a suit and tie and some women wear a nice dress but not a gown. You will not be denied access to the dining room or anything else if you choose not to dress up.

So you can wear anything that suits you and that you will not feel out of place in.  Your dress does not have to be mid-calf or floor length.  If by short you mean knee length or thereabouts, that will be fine.  People dress that way all of the time.

Yes, a short dress, or even dressy evening pants with a sparkly top are appropriate for the formal nights.  You do not need to take lots of dress up clothes, there are usually only 2 or 3 formal nights on most shorter cruises, and people often repeat an outfit.  Pack a long black skirt with several dressy tops, or accessorize a black dress with a glittery shawl or scarf, and jewelry.  Have a great time.  Good Luck.
