Can you wear boardshorts when swimming ?

I would like to wear them in my local pool, would they be suitable ? whats your opinion

For men, but women, why? Your swimsuit should be just fine.

They are designed to be worn in the water.  If you are planning on swimming laps, I wouldn't bother - they produce too much drag and are rather cumbersome.
