I am on Monster looking for a job and there is one that I would like to apply for that the US Navy posted but when I look under the job description it says "Serving part-time in the Navy Reserve allows you to pursue the advantages of civilian life while enjoying....." does that mean I need to join the reserves to apply or do you think that is the office that is hiring?

  1. you can work for the military as a civilian, but being a reservist is not a civilian job.

  2. That particular poster is for the Reserves which means you would have to join the reserves to reap the rewards BUT at the same time it is possible to work for the military without joining depending on your specialty. They use contractors at most bases for a wide range of jobs. You really have to look at the individual base to know which jobs are open though.

Contractors have FAR more freedom than active duty or reserve members and often get paid more. Some deploy but not all - or even most. Someone has to keep the base running when all of the military deploys!

Look at individual bases near your home for job listings - look at their websites, that is.

  3. Yes , that means you have to sign and serve. If you want a government job working with the military go here.

  4. That job involves joining the Navy Reserves. There are some civil service jobs. Go look on www.usajobs.gov  and it has all sorts of government/military jobs that do not require enlisting. You will not get a uniform and all the GI BILLs and bonuses, but you can work for the military without actually being in the military.

  5. yes , my husband is reserves in the army .   and also in iraq right now ,
