Can you work in the U.S. for the summer if you live in Canada?

The answer is "It depends".  Are you a Canadian citizen?  If so, you need a work permit, which could be hard to get.  Are you a student?  If so, you may be able to get a camp counselling job, which my daughter did for a couple of years.  Many summer camps hire international counsellors.  If you are a US citizen, living in Canada, no problem.
