well last night I was terribly sick sweating, chills nausea and coughing I was feeling so bad that I actually had a tear come out of my eye doing all my twisting in bed I kept thinking about my deceased grandmother and her sister who was my great aunt. I felt overwhelmingly sad and I just wanted them to hold me and take care of me, now keep in mind they've been dead for a few years now and I think about them occasionally but not like how it was yesterday, so anyway before I went to sleep I kept saying I wish they were here and I hope they come visit me. well after I finally fall asleep I had a weird dream and both of them were in it and all I can remember is saying"you really came and visited me!" I think I might have asked them how heaven was are something like that I can't remember the rest of the conversation. well do you think that they actually came to me in my dreams? or if cause I was thinking about them that when I fell asleep it was already on my brain? has this happen to you

  1. my niece had a dream one night ,she was 8 at the time, after my mother-in-law had passed (her grandma) she woke up one morning telling her mother (my sister-in-law) that she had the best dream! "I saw grandma and she was happy ......etc......and she said she's with ZiZi and they are having fun" ZiZi (really meant to be ZuZu) was my mother-in-laws husbands brother who had passed eight months prior! There was really no way for my niece to have remembered ZuZu since she had never spent any time with him really and we didn't talk about him very much at all- so for her to bring it up was very shocking to us all after her mother had told us the story. Her mom just said "Oh, that's nice" because she didn't want to freak her daughter out by telling her shed been visited by a spirit in her dream, but her mom was freaking out after wards! Jocie and her grandma were very close so I'm not surprised at all that she paid her a visit to tell her she was OK now- she passed form a long cancer battle.

But you having thought about them before going to sleep can play a role in your dream also. I've slept with the TV on and dreamed about juicers and exercising- because the TV was playing into my dreams.

But I do totally believe loved ones can say hi through your dreams!

  2. I have these dreams alot, mostly with my parents.  I miss them so much.

I do believe our loved ones can visit us in our dreams.

You can identify this dream by the overwhelming joy, happiness and hope which accompanied this dream? Did it seem as if your departed loved one was actually there?

"Visiting us in dreams is one of the easiest ways for our loved ones who now reside in the spiritual realm to call upon us. When we sleep, our souls are much more open to communication with those in the spiritual realm. At times our spirit friends speak in the dreams, and convey very specific messages. Other times, they appear simply to let us know they are still there for us and that they are fine".

  3. Yes.

I have had a number of them.

  4. Sure they can.  They can come to you when you're awake too, in your memories.  There is no reason to think it's anything more than memories when this happens.  You wanted to see them in your dreams and you did.  Relish the time you had with them when you were alive and do what you can to come to terms with their deaths.

  5. Most likely it is something that happens in your mind when you are asleep since you wanted so much to be in contact with them. Sometimes, our dreams can appear so real.

  6. I think it's probably just a dream.They are memories after all.It can be a comfort,I know,but it's perfectly natural.

  7. Yes

  8. There are many documented cases of persons being "visited" in their dreams (or while awake) by deceased loved ones in  order to comfort them in their grief.

Check out the work of Dr. Raymond Moody.

  9. No, they did not actually come to you in your dreams. The deceased can not contact the living, even in dreams, its just not possible.

What you experienced is not unlike watching a powerful movie and then having a dream about it that night. It was just a matter of suggestion which stimulated your mind to create a dream of your grandmother and great aunt.

If you are just here trying to confirm your belief that they really visited you, then you are better off posting in mythology and folklore. This being the science and math section, I will tell you that it is not possible for them to visit you.

  10. OK, here is all of the story.

Many people believe that spirits/souls/etc. of the departed can visit you in your dreams. This is a basic belief in many religions and practices such as Shamanism and Shinto as well as many Native American nations. There have been some well documented reports of people dreaming their relatives that communicated information to them that the person did not know. For instance where the will was hidden before the father's death. (citation below)

Unfortunately, it is impossible to separate this from information being acquired by ESP (Since spirits refuse to step up and take credit). For this reason science is better at studying ESP (without crediting a source for the information) and ESP has been studied in dreams with positive results (see citation below).

It is also possible that your mind dreamed this in order to comfort you in your time of need. Without evidence (like information unknown to you) it can't be said with any probability which it might have been.

However, I unlike some of YA psuedoskeptics am not all knowing and I have never been dead so all I have is science and it's methods to work with. Thus, I can not say if spirits visited you or if it was just a dream or that it is impossible for the deceased to contact the living or even if anything survives after death with any level of certainty.

I can inform you about the scientific efforts to examine this question (see below).

Also, your personal experience can only be answered by you (no one else shared your dream and experienced it the way you did). What it means and what it was is up to you.

However, might I suggest another way of looking at it. There is a saying that "To Speak of the Dead is to make them live again" . I would suggest that even if it was just a dream that the memories of love and comfort from your family in your mind could be thought of as their (or part of their) spirit. So, in that sense it seems their spirit was comforting to you. Just a thought.

  11. deceased relatives can definitely come to you when they know u need them.  after my cousin died i had 3 three dreams about him, one about the birth of his neice which didnt happen untill like 4 years later and the last two times were before my great granparents died.  In each dream he was trying to comfort me because something was happening the scary thing is that my aunt which was his mother and his sister all had a dream about him the same night he died we all woke up the same way crying and clutching the person in bed with us. The next morning we we found out my great grandpa died then a year later the same exact thing with my great grandmother.  so it does happen they know that u needed them.
