Can your dog use a mirror?

Question

they say dogs fail the "mirror test". and sure enough, when my dog was a puppy he would bark like crazy at his reflection. but now that he's older, i sometimes see him looking at me in the mirror: he will be laying down facing the mirror (i think my dog is vain, i see him stare at himself all the time) but i see his eyes focusing at the point where my reflection is and he'll even turn around and play with me if i mouth his name.

We have a floor length mirror and both our dogs love to look in the mirror and l**k it:)

My dogs use a mirror all the time. They ask it who's the prettiest dog of all. They tell me they are too fat/not pretty enough. I took away the mirrors.

My dog ignores mirrors but will stare at the reflections on the smoked glass stereo door. Go figure.

My dog does something similar. When we adopted her she was already 7 and the first time she came into our bedroom she looked at herself in the mirror like she had never seen one before but she seemed to understand it was herself she was looking at.

Now that she is more confident, she plays with the mirror too. If I'm lying in bed and looking at the mirror and she comes in the room, she will look at me via the mirror and when I look away she knows I will look at her for real.

SO WHAT???????????????????????? This is completely normal. Nothing special about it. The dog reacts to what he sees.

I believe they see their reflection in the mirror and say "you handsome devil you".
