  1. There is only one maid/matron of honor.

I would say no---the mother of the bride is already in a position of importance at a wedding.

  2. Check out the wedding etiquette websites.

  3. Its your wedding and your day. You can do anything you want.

It would be unusual, but nothing wrong with that.

  4. Traditionally the maid of honor is just that, a maiden.  She is there to fill in for the bride if she cannot complete her commitment.  That means the groom would be marrying his potential mother in-law.  Not a good idea.

  5. While as the bride, it's your day and you can do what you want, I think it would be a little strange to have your mom as the matron of honor.  As Holly said, your Mom already has a special place of honor - she's the mother of the bride.  And while she's not part of the wedding party, I don't think wearing an identical dress as the bridesmaids is a good idea, maybe she can wear a dress that's the same style or similar style, but in a different color.  Or in one of the wedding colors (most people choose a couple colors for their wedding), but not the exact dress as what the bridesmaids are wearing.
