  1. Bardic is nearly right.

The phonetic alpahabet is not NATO - it was adopted for aviation purposes by ICAO.

Callsigns only need to be given in full on first contact, thereafter they can be abbreviated unless that would cause confusion, ie 2 aircraft with the same 1st, 4th and 5th letters in their registration (callsign).

  2. Okay.  Control says "Descend (to) 5000ft, altimeter 1019".

    Aircraft says "Descend 5000ft, 1019.  G-OJIB"

Control says "Expect straight-in ILS Runway 17 Right."

Aircraft says "Expect straight-in ILS 17 Right.  G-OJIB."

    Control finishes with "Si."

What's happening is that the controller is issuing instructions and information, which the aircraft acknowledges by repeating back, adding his callsign.

ADD: Not entirely sure what you're saying in your addition, but yes, it is required to use the NATO phonetic alphabet to pronounce registration letters. For what it's worth, you have to recite the whole registration until or unless the controller shortens it, to Golf India Bravo it would be in this case, then you, as the pilot can do so as well.

  3. Yup Bardic is right.  The rego G-OJIB (Gulf Oscar Juliette India Bravo) is on the plane right behind the wing. http://www.planepictures.net/netshow.php...
