  1. Do your sister a favor and just feed and water her duck.   Pekin ducks don't fly. They couldn't fly if you threw them off of the Empire State Bld. It is best to not put the baby in the water until it is feathered out. A baby duck will sit under his mother and dry out. With only one baby and no brooder it is hard to dry one out properly and they don't make it.

  2. They dont need to be tought, thats instinct and yes you can let them in a tub or sink. I prefer a kiddy pool, the plastic ones and they are easy to clean and you wont have to clean the tub out. They tend to poo when swimming.

There is one tinsy, incy problem, Pekin ducks can Not fly. They are a heavyweight duck. They are too heavy to fly. You can NOt tech them to fly. If you had a mallard and such yes. They some times would tech themselves how to fly but the breed you have cant.

  3. Yeah, I'm sure the duckling will have no problems swimming, just keep a close eye on him/her.

Although do not put soap or anything in the water, one of my friends decided to wash a duckling with soap once, she only had good intensions, but the duckling died as a result.

And you can't teach pekin ducks to fly (too heavy), let alone a duckling, their feet need to either stay firmly on ground or in water.

Good luck, and I hope your sister is impressed with her ducklings abilites once she returns!

  4. idk

  5. When I have my ducklings in the house until they are feathered out and ready to go outside, when I clean their box I fill a tum about half full with luke warm water and sit and watch them swim.

I NEVER leave them alone because they can get tired and when they get tired and cant stay afloat on their own they could drown.  But really and truly it is FUN to sit and watch them splash, play and dive.

When swim time is over I dry off the majority of the water and put them back in their box where I have a 100 watt light bulb suspended so to keep them warm. . . . this is especially important when the duckling is wet.

I agree that Pekin ducks don't fly.  Ocassionally mine will act like they are trying to fly but in all reality they really look like they are running on their tippy toes while vigorously flapping their wings.

  6. Ducklings don't fly.  They must be an adult and have all their feathers.  Domestic ducks only fly a few feet.  You can let the duckling swim in the tub for a little while.  Not too long because they don't have all the protective down they need to keep them warm yet.  They only have "baby down" and can get chilled if you leave them in the water too long...
