Question:

Canada - Computer Technician Jobs?

Hello,

My husband will be repatriating to Toronto next year after having lived most of his life in Europe. He has been working as a computer technician for the past ten years doing mostly pc maintanance, network configuration, trouble shooting hardware & software, network administrator for small offices (up to 30 users) etc. He did not complete his computer studies program at college, so I was wondering if this will create problems when looking for work? I've seen many job postings that ask for various certifications, such as CompTIA A+ and MSCE, so I was hoping someone here could tell me which certifications he should take that could help him find employment? Which certifications are most favoured by companies in his line of work?

Thanks for your help.

  1. If he will be working mainly with PC environments, any certifications he can provide will improve his chances of being hired by a firm.

Taking the Microsoft Certifications are a definite plus. Others include some sort of experience or certification in either networking components or in Citrix Metaframe and VMWare.

If he will be looking for technical support positions or development work, Java and C++ is still in demand, and so is XML and Microsoft .Net applications.

I would not expect him to have that hard a time finding work in Toronto, especially in the Mississauga or Markham areas if he does not want to have to commute downtown every day. I would have him start looking on the job boards in Canada now and update his resume. Ideally, you want to be able to arrive here with a job waiting for you rather than trying to find one once you get here.
