Ken Pereira and Rob Short break Bubli Chohan’s highest cap record
Rob Short and Ken Pereira, the fabled hockey pros of Canada, have surpassed the Bubli Chohan’s long standing cap record on Tuesday April 19, 2011. The duo veterans reached 318 international appearances, exceeding the record of 317 caps of Bubli, who held
it for more than fifteen years. In the third match against Ireland, the Canadian pair surpassed their team-mate and held the highest position in the team.
Ken Pereira and Rob Short, the combination of Canadian stars, reached 300 international caps in the FIH World Cup held in 2010 in New Delhi, India.
Rob and Ken, the pair, joined the Junior National Squad back in 1990, while promoted to Senior National Team within a short span of four years, 1994. From then onwards, they are playing in the team. The two players have contested a couple of Olympic Games
in 2000, 2008, and two editions of the World Cups in 1998 and 2010. They also have competed in four versions of the Commonwealth Games, consecutively in 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010. They have taken part in four Pan American Games held in 1995, 1999, 2003 and
2007 besides, contesting three Pan Americans Cups in 2000, 2004 and in 2009. The duo veterans are looking forward to win a gold medal in the upcoming Pan American Games scheduled to be held in October 2011. The gold medal will give Canada a direct spot in
the 2012 London Olympic Games.
In a delighting state, Bubli Chohan said that he was expecting this, as these two players were very dedicated and committed with the sport.
He stated, “In all honesty I was expecting this moment for a while. I'm happy for Ken and Rob especially knowing how dedicated and passionate they are for the sport and it was a lot of fun playing with both of them for a few years before I retired.”
Mary Cicinelli, the President of the Field Hockey Canada, while speaking to the media said that it was a marvellous achievement by the two players to reach 318 caps in the international hockey. He further stated that Canada should admire the services of
Ken and Rob what they rendered in the field of hockey.
Ken Pereira, while speaking to the media persons, said he played his first game with the national team back in 1994, adding he didn’t think to reach 300+ international caps for his country. He stated, “It was a dream that I always had and to think that I
would be able to enjoy it for 16 years - I could never have imagined such a career.”
The pair of legends is looking forward to the Pan Americans Games and the 2012 London Olympics as their final destinations.
