Canada Men’s basketball will not be playing in London Olympics
The Canadian Men’s basketball team recently lost a qualification match and has once again not been able to clear the qualification stage for the Olympic Games. Only teams that have been able to secure the first as well as the second positions in the FIBA
Americas championship have the honour of showcasing their skills in the Olympics next year.
This failure to move up to the Olympic tournament is the third in a row for the Canadian men’s basketball team and it has triggered the resignation of the head coach, Leo Rautins.
The Canadian team was competing in the FIBA Americas tournament that was being held in Argentina, with the developing side from Panama. The final score stood at the following figures: 91-89.
Rautins made the following statement upon his resignation from the program: “A lot of good things have happened unless you’re close to this program you’re not going to see. To continue the things that need to be done, I’ve made a decision that this team
needs a new voice in the locker room.”
Some observers think that Canada could have been seen in a different light had had the star player, Steve Nash, managed to make an appearance for the side. However, Nash had his days full playing for the Whitecaps. Nash is being paid a huge sum of money
for the team he was busy playing with while Canada suffered from the Olympic setback. Nash gets more than $ 10 million in compensation from the Whitecaps.
The Olympics Games are a prestigious international sporting event that take place every two years. This time around, the city of London will be playing host to the summer version of the event. It will not be the first time that London will have the honour
of welcoming the Olympics to its home soil, it has already done so twice in the past. The first time that London played host to the Olympic Games was in 1908 whereas the second time the event took place in the city in the year 1948. However, after having featured
the Olympic Games next year, London will become the first city in the world to have the honour of doing so thrice.
