Do Canadian Provinces vote on things the way American states do?

Yes, Canadian Provinces can vote on specific issues like the States do but it is rare.  I am Canadian but have been living in the US for the past ten years so I've seen a bit of both systems.  I think you are referring to the US states voting on issues like same-s*x marriage.  The referendum that stands out in my mind, is the 1995 Quebec Referendum.  Quebec voters were asked if Quebec should become a sovereign nation, independent of Canada.  It was defeated by a small margin.

I am not sure I have to confess I am not really up on the political process of the US.  It depends on what things you are talking about.  There are municipal issues, provincial and federal issues.  I do know that your president can only be elected into office twice and our prime minster can be reelected to the day he dies if the people want him.
