What do I need to cross the border to Canada...

do I need a passport yet, or can i just show them my license

  1. Passport is certainly the simplest way to travel but if you are crossing by car it is not yet law yet.  You have to have I.D that proves that you were born or are at least a U.S. citizen they like a picture on that ID as well.  Drivers lic do not prove that you were born anywhere, just that you are allowed to drive a car.

  4. I've been trying to figure this out as well since I will be going to Seattle in a few months.  As far as I can tell if you are driving or taking a ferry across the border then you need a drivers license AND birth certificate.  They have extended the deadline to June 2009.  

    If you're American entering Canada then all you need is drivers license--but when you go to enter to the US again then you need drivers license and birth certificate.

    However if you are flying then you NEED a passport and nothing else.

    Although if anyone else knows anything that says I'm wrong let me know.
