Question

We will be visiting Canada this summer, specifically to see Niagara Falls, ride Maid of the Mist, and do some touring in the area. We have all our passports and are ready to go, but we would like to know if there are other attractions around that area that would also be worth seeing while we are there. Any suggestions would be helpful! (10 points to the most helpful, I do go back and vote on my questions!) Anyone from the area or who have visited the have any ideas for us?

The Brock's Monument is a notable landmark within the nearby Queenston Heights Park and dates back to the mid-19th century. Commemorating Major General Isaac Brock, who died in this area during the 1812 War, the monument measures around 55 meters / 180 feet in height.

The Historic Fort George, a popular excursion from Niagara Falls, can be found in the village of Niagara on the Lake. An important site used during the War of 1812, this ancient landmark stands inside the Fort George National Historic Park and offers a selection of attractions and artifacts, housed in restored army barracks and officers quarters. Historic Fort George also features a trail, which leads to the nearby Fort Mississauga.

Located in Youngstown, just 15 miles / 24 km from Niagara Falls, Old Fort Niagara is an important New York State Historic Site and can be reached in just over 20 minutes by car. An important, historic fortification, attractions here include a number of buildings which were built almost 300 years ago, seasonal re-enactments of battles, archaeological finds and educational exhibits. Each year Old Fort Niagara attracts in excess of 100,000 visitors, who come to enjoy the many historical attractions and military memorabilia.

Owned and managed by the Niagara Parks Commission, the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens are simply vast. Covering in excess of 100 acres / 40 hectares, the Botanical Gardens were founded in the 1930s and contain many impressive landscaped areas and important collections. Home to the Butterfly Conservatory, each year the gardens attract huge numbers of visitors and further highlights include an arboretum, wildlife areas and gift shop.

Full of tropical and exotic plant specimens, the Niagara Parks Greenhouse is close to the Falls. With many fragrant and colorful plants to view, together with a number of impressive collections, unusual species and landscaped garden areas, the Niagara Parks Greenhouse hosts many seasonal plant shows throughout the year, including a major event at Christmas.

Restaurants in Niagara Falls tend to conform to traditional Canadian opening hours, with some variations depending upon the cuisine and location. Breakfast venues generally open from 06:00 onwards and central coffee shops start to fill up from 08:00 to 09:00. Lunchtime restaurants and dining venues in Niagara Falls start serving brunch from 10:00 and remain open well into the afternoon, closing at around 15:00 to prepare for the evening dining rush. Other popular family restaurants in central Niagara Falls include Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock Café, both of which are close to the nearby Casino Niagara building.

Some of the city's most popular restaurants can be found around the Clifton Hill area and along Stanley Avenue and Victoria Avenue. Catering for all tastes, restaurants in this area of Niagara Falls regularly offer both breakfast and lunchtime specials, which are usually well promoted and hard to miss.

Many on the larger hotels in downtown Niagara Falls contain restaurants, which are usually open to non-residents and vary greatly in both quality and price, although most are quite affordable and often offer extensive buffets. Also, some bed and breakfasts in Niagara Falls offer inexpensive, home-cooked food in their dining rooms.
