Canada and Brazil win - FIBA U-19 World Championship Roundup of 9th July (Part-3)
Canada 84 – Egypt 79
Small forward Dyshawn Pierre propelled the Canadian team towards an electrifying 84-79 victory over Egypt on Saturday during a matchup to determine 9-12 positions in the 2011 FIBA U-19 World Championship.
Pierre was absolutely brilliant and finished the game with a game-high 28 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Point guard Kevin Pangos teamed up with Pierre and kept the score board ticking with his 18 points.
Four players from the Egyptian team landed double figures. They were led by their superstar Assem Ahmed, however the opposition created a stronger impact overall. The 19 year old Ahmed racked up a team-high 19 points and clutched
13 boards in 32 minutes of playing time.
Both the teams showed great commitment with the start of the proceedings in the first quarter and encountered with their full strength. Egypt managed to gain 18-17 lead as the game marked its way towards the second period.
The second quarter was the decisive period for the Canadian team in which they snatched the lead from the opposition and procured 38-34 advantage before halftime and never trailed throughout the game.
Egypt strived to reclaim the advantage in the third quarter however Canada kept their momentum intact and amplified the lead to five points. The fourth quarter depicted tremendous fight back from both the teams when Egypt was pushing
to strike back while Canada was strongly defending their position. The thrilling contest in the final period ended with 21-21 tie as the Canadian team romped towards 5-point victory.
Brazil 81 – Latvia 73
The Brazilian team carried the action dominantly down the stretch and clinched a magnificent 81-73 victory over Latvia to book the 9th spot in the 2011 FIBA U-19 World Championship.
Davi Rossetto and Bruno Irigoyen were the top performers for Brazil and guided the team towards a smashing win. The point guard Davi racked up 19 points while the small forward Bruno finished the game with 17 points.
On the other hand, Latvian teams influential centre Davis Bertans posted another outstanding performance in his final game of the tournament as he notched up a game-high 25 points and gathered 5 rebounds. However his efforts fell
short in the end.
Brazil headed out commandingly in the first quarter and clinched a comprehensive 21-14 lead. Latvia strengthened their offensive assail in the second quarter however the Brazilian team kept their composure and didn’t let the game
go out of their hand. Latvia managed to cut down the deficit by 1 point as the game progressed into the second half when the score board read 41-35.
The Latvian team dominated in the third period and outscored the opposition 19-17. Latvia slowly built the momentum in the game to put themselves on the frontline, however Brazil retorted in the defining moments of the game to
seal a win.
