Canada and Serbia win - FIBA U-19 World Championship Round-up of July 5, 2011: (Part 1)
Game-1/8: Canada 91 – Egypt 71
Kevin Pangos spearheaded Canada, as they routed Egypt 91-71 in a Group-F game on Tuesday. With this victory the Canadian side grasped their second win out of six contests and stands at fifth position in Group-F with eight points
under their belt.
Pangos made game-high 22 points and led all scorers, along with the points Kevin also clutched three rebounds, provided one assist and made two steals. During his 27 minutes log, he made six field goals out of nine attempts and
hit five whooshes from the three-point range.
Canada tipped off aggressively and dominated Egyptians throughout the first quarter, as Canadian squad led Egypt by 25-14 by the end of the first period.
The one way traffic continued in the second quarter as well as the Canadians keep penetrating into the weak defence of Egyptian squad. When the first half ended Canadians were able to make some strong footings, as they pushed their
advantage to 48-30.
Canada didn’t let the momentum slip away after the break and kept their assault going. Canada went on stretching their lead and scored 27 points in the period, which was their highest during any frame in the entire game.
Canada led Egypt by 30 points into the final quarter of the game, but didn’t go for the kill. The Egyptians tried to take the advantage of the situation and made the charge, but in the end Canada’s lead proved, too high a mountain
for them to climb up to. Canada won the game by 20-point margin.
Power forward Marawan Mohamed led the Egyptian squad with his 16 points along with seven rebounds and 50 percent shooting from the field.
Game-2/8: Serbia 73 – Croatia 68
Marko Gujanicic remained the major contributor for Serbia and they used a late charge to overcome Croatia in a 73-68 win on Tuesday in a Group-F game. Serbia now stands at fourth spot in their group and so far has won four games
out six, acquired 10 points for that.
Gujanicic thumped 12 points together with nine rebounds during his 32 minutes stay on court. His team-mates Aleksandar Cvetkovic and Petar Lambic also tallied 12 points apiece.
Both teams looked to dominate each other right from the tip of the game, but it was Serbia which eventually succeeded in pulling away the first quarter by 16-11 advantage.
Croatia quickly shed their trendiness and made some brisk possessions that notched the lead down. Croatians were finally able to tie the score 31-31, as the first half ended.
The battle for domination continued after the break and the skirmish took the peak, as both teams didn’t want to lose the momentum, when Croatians made the breakthrough in the ensuing minutes of the third quarter, which allowed
them to secure first quarter in their favour by 50-48.
The Serbians got themselves together in the finals quarter and strike back at the Croatian squad and outscored them with a 25-18 burst that put the game in their lap.
Boris Barac scored game-high 18 points, grabbed six rebounds, provided three assist and made two steals for Croatia.
