Canada and Spain win: FIBA U-19 World Championship for Women Roundup July 22, 2011(Part 3)
Canada 99 – Egypt 54
In a Group-A game, Canada routed Egypt 99-54 on Friday and pounced on another two points in the preliminary round.
Nirra Fields once again played the leading role for her side. She racked up 19 points, on a 52.9 percent shooting, clutched four rebounds, distributed two assists and made four steals for Canada, who also got 12 points apiece from
Diana Lee and Korissa Williams.
For Egypt, Hagar Amer played for 29 minutes and led the team with 14 points, five rebounds and one steal. Amer shot 54.5 percent from the field. Reem Osama also scored 12 points for Egypt.
Canada made early inroads and used a 28-5 stretch to seize the first quarter in their favour. Although, Egypt made a little better effort in the second quarter, they failed to limit the offensive battery of Canada. By the time,
the teams went into the locker room; Canada was leading Egypt 53-19. The one way traffic continued after the break and Canada eventually routed the listless Egyptians by 45 points.
Spain 77 – Chinese Taipei 47
Spain overshadowed Chinese Taipei 77-47 during a Group-D game on Friday. Spanish squad dominated Taipei both from the field. They shot 44.8 percent from the field, including 23.5 percent from the long range, as compared to 25 percent
field shooting by the Chinese Taipei.
Queralt Casas led Spain with 18 points, two rebounds and one assist during her 26 minutes action on the court. Casas hit 58.3 percent from the field while Marina Delgado chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Chi-Fang Chang was the top scorer for Taipei with 12 points while Yu-Chun Wei added nine points for the Taipei team.
The first quarter was a tightly fought affair through most part. Both the teams missed some easy opportunities to score and the cold shooting meant that the teams combined for only 24 points in the frame, with Spain leading the
way at 14-10. The second quarter displayed a bit of the same. Taipei however managed to slash one back and trailed Spain 26-23, going into the break.
The Spanish team broke the game after the game. They got their shooting going in the frame and outscored Taipei 30-11 to seize control of the game. Spain led Taipei by 56-34 going into the final quarter and outplayed them 21-13
in the last ten minutes again to register the game in their favour by 30-points.
