I had my baby when i was 17 and until recently my mother has been caring for her and receiving the benefit. Is there a way to switch that over to me now that I'm caring for her even though i don't have a job or spouse?

  1. CCTB is given to the individual who is caring for the spouse, and responsible for the financial upkeep for the child.

Since your mother was receiving the benefit, having it changed will require proof on your part.  You will need to show that your child is in your care and under your financial control.

If you have any questions, call the CRA at 1-800-959-8281 and ask to be transferred to a CCTB specialist.  They will tell you what is required, and mail you the appropriate form.

  2. The previous answer gave the wrong advice and the wrong telephone number.

You need to file an application for the Child Tax benefits. Go to the CRA web site and print form RC66. You maybe asked to prove that the child is in your care, but don't provide it until/unless the CRA asks you for it. It might be to your advantage to have your mum sign a letter stating that care for your child has transferred to you.

In order to qualify for the Child tax benefits, you MUST file an income tax return for the year 2007, even if you had no income. If the child came into your care before June 1, you must also file a return for the year 2006.

Contact Child Benefits directly at 1-800-387-1193. They might be busy right now. Wednesday was a payment day.
