Canada defeat Brazil in 2010 SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championship final in Turkey
The five-day beach volleyball tournament which graced Turkey for the first time, just ended with Canada’s victory in the final match. Milli Egemnlik, Obakoy in Alanya hosted the championship and provided an excellent opportunity for players to show their
talent. A total of 78 men and women’s teams from 32 nations got together to be a part of this campaign.
After a series of wins in the tournament, the outstanding 18th-seeded Canadian duo of Garrett May/Sam Schachter captured a slot in the “final four” matches. They remained undefeated and refused to be knocked out in the pool play and main-draw
matches. They paved their way to the most influential part of the championship with seven consecutive victories (7-0).
Quite similarly, the all-time favourites Brazil was never behind in the game. Brazil’s experienced 2nd-seeded Vitor Felipe and Alvaro Filho demonstrated a brilliant game and joined Canada in the medal matches. The two pairs faced each other in
the final of 2010 SWATCH FIVB U-21 Junior World Championship on Sunday, 19th September, 2010.
First Set
Last year’s silver medallist Brazilian pair started the first set with nippy shots. They played in their usual style and tried to influence Canadian players. It was the first time for Canada to see its players competing at this level in the championship.
Garrett May/Sam Schachter was thrilled with the sense of achievement and seemed to have enough pride and potential in them. They played Brazil with great power and refused to come under pressure from the other side. The game in the first made for a nail-biting
contest, as both sides were playing so fantastically.
The Alanya Centre Court was filled with cheering fans, who thoroughly enjoyed the final showdown between the two best teams of the championship. The game continued in the same fashion while no side was ready to accept defeat. The score reached the finish
line and tussle was still on. Finally Brazil was able to get an edge and ended the first set with 23-21 victory.
Second Set
Lady luck seemed to be with the Brazilian side in the first set. Otherwise, Canadian pair displayed a superb performance and were always looking to attack. Somehow, they had their second chance to prove their endeavour against Brazil in the next set. May/Sam
produced good serves in the second set and constantly kept a keen eye on the ball. Brazilians were surprised with the heavy strike of volleys and aces for May/Sam. They had a hard time to deal with the cruising shots. In the meanwhile, Canadian pair sparked
and created a lead in the set.
Since they attained a commanding position in the game, they didn’t stop afterwards. Fans were treated to an impressive display of digging and spiking. Canada levelled the score by winning the second set with a margin of 5 points. The second set was finished
at 21-16.
Third Set
The third set was full of fury as both teams were filled with the thrust of victory. There was hardly any room for mistakes in the crucial set. Canadians had a good level of energy because the second-set victory had filled them with a lot of confidence.
The game picked-up more pace as it inched its way to the end-line. The Canadian duo outshined and left Vitor Felipe and Alvaro Filho behind. They overcame the Brazilian power and kept on hitting spikes. May and Sam ultimately achieved 15-13 to finish the game.
Canada won their first ever gold medal at the SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championship at Alanya, Turkey, by defeating Brazil. It was the most delightful moment for the team and country as well.
Congrats!
