Canada defeats Japan by 3-0 in the second round of FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship
The Japanese and the Canadian teams competed with each other in the second round of the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship on August 5th. Brazil is playing host to the tournament and the venue of the match was the Ciao Martins gymnasium,
Niteroi. Spurred on by the support of the home crowd, the North Americans won the match by making a clean sweep over their opponents.
Not only did the Canadian squad hand out a defeat to the Japanese team in tree back to back sets, the did so by winning each set of the game by quite a margin. The first set was a comfortable win for the Canadians while the Japanese stepped up their game
in the second set. Still the effort was not enough to scrap together a win. Likewise, the Canadians sailed through the third set with ease and sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-12, 25-17 and 25-14.
The Canadian coach made the following comments at the press conference after his team had won the match: “It was a great match, the blocks made the difference, but now we have to make the defense better. The supporters helped us a lot.”
On the other hand, the Japanese coach, Noriaki Sako expressed himself in the following manner: “The match wasn´t like I´ve expected. Unfortunately the passes weren´t working. Our emotional side wasn’t helping the team.”
The first set of the match saw the Canadians take the lead at 5-1 after which the Japanese called for a time out in an effort to disrupt the building momentum of the Canadian team. However, the strategy did not work and the Canadians were able to extend
their lead to 16-7. After that point, the Japanese kept on trailing the Canadians, who managed to bag themselves a win at 25-12.
Japan stepped up its game at the start of the second set but still could not take the lead. The Canadians were ahead 6-5 which they were able to extend till 12-5. The Japanese tried to close in the gap but to no avail and the Canadians kept on moving towards
another set win at 25-17.
The loss of the first two sets of the game further dampened the spirits of the Japanese and Canada was able to get the lead early on at 8-4. The Japanese kept trailing behind with the Canadians moving ahead at 10-7. The Canadians went on a run that took
them to 16-7. It was only a matter of time after that the Canadians were able to seal the deal on the match at 25-14.
With their recent win, the Canadians have been able to tally 1-0 in the second round of the tournament while the Japanese have registered 0-1.
