Canada falls to Great Britain by 6-0 in first match of their UK Tour
The men’s senior Canadian team got defeated in the first match of their United Kingdom (UK) tour played against the Great Britain (GB) by 6-0, held on April 13 in Scotland.
The first game of the two-match series began with equal energy demonstrated by both the teams in the hockey field. However, the opening goal was scored by GB, when a striker got into action in the 8th minute and struck a shot
past the Canadian goal-keeper, Toni Kindler. The score opened with 1-0 lead for GB over Canada.
After a while, Canada took up the field control and made a run to the GB’s defensive circle. However, they failed to add up a goal on the score-board.
In the 19th minute of the first half, the English hockey men were again found in action, winning themselves a short-corner. It was quite successfully cleared by the Canadian defenders, keeping the score at 1-0.
However, England was back in action in the very next minute and hit a strong shot past the Canadian goal-keeper, to double their lead by 2-0.
This goal opened up doors for the GB's players to knock off the Canadian team with a gigantic lead after scoring another three successive goals at the 25th, 27th and 30th minute, closing the
first half at 5-0 score lead.
In the second half, a totally changed Canadian team came up the surface. The game was found to be more in their hands when they finally received a short-corner in the 45th minute of the match. The attempt to score was however
denied by the British goal-keeper, clearing the ball out of the circle.
In the 57th minute of the game, GB regained the ball possession and earned their second short-corner of the match. The Canadian defence comprising of Scott Tupper, Jesse Watson, Rob Short and Toni Kindler denied the opponent’s
attempt to score.
Soon, GB attempted another short-corner that got in contact with Jesse Watsons' arm, a Canadian defender. The umpire called for a penalty-stroke award to GB over this foul, declaring the body contact as an intention to prevent the goal.
Finally, the stroke was availed and this time England added up their sixth goal on the scoreboard, raising the lead to 6-0. The rest of the match was a fast-paced fight in which the leading team put off a defensive show to hold Canada from opening
