Canada keeping 2012 FIVB World League hopes alive – Volleyball news
The Men’s National Volleyball Team of Canada is keeping its hopes alive to play in the 2012 FIVB World League, which will be held from May 21 to July 8 next year.
A total of 16 volleyball teams from all across the globe will join the competition. However, the grid of teams is yet to be finalised. There is just one team confirmed for the 2012 FIVB World so far and that is Bulgaria. The Bulgarian National Team has the
guarantee to participate in the competition for being the host of Final Round.
The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) recently announced that Final Round of 2012 FIVB World League will be staged in Bulgarian Capital Sofia. The rest of participants of the competition will undergo the qualification process.
In this regard, Team Canada is scheduled to host the first leg of the qualification tournament for 2012 FIVB World League in Ottawa from July 29-30. Basically, it is a two-match series, which will be attended by Slovakia, Slovenia and Canada. The Scotiabank
Place in Ottawa, Ontario will set up the field of play for this competition. Canadian Team was given the right to serve as host of the qualification tournament on account of its better ranking as compared to the other two teams. Canada is currently ranked
number 22 on world chart, while Slovakia and Slovenia come at 33rd and 39th positions, respectively.
The two-match series in Ottawa will follow the formula that 3-0 or 3-1 victory will provide the successful team with three points, while only 2 points will be awarded for 3-2 victory. The losing side will get no points but 1 point will be awarded for 2-3
defeat. If Canada will manage to defeat the opponents in this competition, it will get the chance to host the second round of qualification tournament next month. In the second leg of the qualification tournament, Japan and Puerto Rico will Canada. Both teams
recently finished 15th and 16th in this year’s World League.
Canada has not been able to win the qualification for FIVB World League for last 4 years. They last competed at the 2007 FIVB World League, where they were eliminated from the preliminary round and finished in 13th position. Canadian team has a positive
attitude to go for next year’s competition. They recently worked out good progress at the Pan American Volleyball Cup in Gatineau, Quebec and captured bronze medal.
Recent success at the Pan American Cup and advantage of familiar conditions will surely benefit Canada to outdo potential competitors at the current home series. The Canadian fans look forward to the upcoming competition, which provide them some fine display
of their favourite game.
