My friends and I are going to eastern canada in about 3 weeks..we have some questions and would appreciate any help:

1) Dumb and probably an obvious answer, but do Canadians have the same type of wall outlets as Americans? We know Montreal is a french-type city and dont know if the European feel went that far...

2)In the main cities such as Toronto, Quebec, and Montreal, what are the typical taxi rates when driving to different locations in the downtown area?

3)Is there a specific address for Parliament Hill (Ottawa)?

4)Are there any cheap hotels in St. Andrews, NB? The only one I can find is The Fairmont Algonquin for $156...are there any cheap Inns in the area?

Thanks for the help! =)

  1. Wow... you must be americain. THey are the same outlets all across canada (Quebec still uses Canadian hydro, not hydro from france). Taxi rates, same as everywhere. Not too bad, not sure exactly thought. Parliment Hill is located at Parliament Hill, Ottawa, ON. Ask anyone in the city, they will know exactly, all Canadians do. For cheap hotels in NB, they might not have websites, only the big ones. Drive around and you will find B&B, and other inns.

  2. 1) Canada's electrical outlets are the same as the US - 110-120 volts - triple prong outlets. You won't need to bring any kind of adaptor with you.

    2) Taxi rates? Couldn't say for sure but if you are looking at the best/cheapest way to get around, consider public transit. The cities you mention are pretty big but here are some rates I've been able to find. For Toronto - Toronto taxi rides are usually charged by the km and by the minute, according to a regulated taxi rate: Approx. $2.75 initial charge + $1.00 per KM + $0.40 (from www.416-taxicab.com/). For Montreal, I found Taxis in Montreal must, by law, charge the same rate, which changed just last week. The new rates are: 2.75$ to get in 1.30$/km and 29.95$/hour of waiting (from www.virtualtourist.com/.../Canada/Provin... For Quebec City, I found TAXI Fare : starting : 3,15$ / km : 1,30$ / min  - from www.telegraphe.com/transports/indexen.ht... ). Bear in mind that these are approximations but they're good places to start.

    3) Ottawa's Parliament buildings are on Wellington Street and are very easy to both find and visit. Look through http://www.parl.gc.ca/information/visito... and you'll see what I mean. As for getting there, while you could certainly take a cab, you would be much better off taking the bus.

    4) Try these sites http://www.kingsbrae.com/ratesandreserva... and http://www.standrewsmotorinn.com/ratesre...

Hope this helps you and welcome to Canada! Enjoy your visit!
