  1. Oh come on now!!!!

The Canadians did a wonderful job with the diving and in some other area's medals dont count effort does and that they do have

  2. Sour Grapes!

for me, Canadians has no credibility anymore.

It's not the funding.  it's not the weather...

    whiner's we all are.  eh?

  3. The reason Canada is not as good in the Olympics as countries like China is because many of the Canadian athletes are in university and they have lives. The Chinese dedicate themselves to their sport, you dont see them going to school, they practice all of the time. Canada is good considering they do their sport aside from going to school and everything, if all of our athletes did nothing other than train, we would probably have way more medals, but I think it is a good thing that they can train as well as have a life.

  4. Wanda i've heard that excuse about the Canadians a few times and here are some problems with it. Yes Canada's population isn't as big as the USA's but there are plenty of countries smaller than Canada that have won a medal. And i'm sure they're funding from the government is pretty bad too.  I've also heard the excuse of not having enough of a summer to train but Australia manages to win some medals in the Winter Games and our winters suck. Plus the government doesn't give them much funding cause all the money goes to the summer olympic athletes. But we still win a few medals cause our athletes will move to other countries just to train all year round. It's a dedication that Canadian athletes don't seem to have.

I'm not trying to bag Canada...h**l I live there. I'm just saying a lot of Canadians are questioning why they don't perfom well and there seem to be merit behind it.  If you want to get back to the Winter Olympics Australia has sent, in the history of us competing in those Olympics, a total of 252 athletes to compete. That's less than the amount of athletes you sent to this years Summer Olympics alone.  A majority of Winter sports are only available to people who live in a winter climate...which we don't. A majority of Australians have never seen snow let alone put on a pair of skis.  I don't think i'm being sarcastic when I say that every Canadian knows how to run or swim or has access to 90% of the other sports compteted in the Olympics in their own towns...without having to live in another country to train in it. So I still can't see the reason why they do so poorly. Most of these sports are trained for indoors anyway so you can't blame the weather.

  5. there's is no excuse.

norway, sweden etc. (winter countries with small population) has medals.

    Canada simply pathetic.

    depressing, ain't it?

    What's your excuse?

According to a Recent popular US article on the L.A. Times.

A little question of history. Mordecai Richler (a Canadian satirical novelist and satirical children's novelist) once suggested that what defines Canadians is the fact that we're all, quite literally, losers--and we've never gotten over the fact. Nobody actually actively chose to live here because they really liked the idea. The natives, who were always here, didn't choose to have the European-dominated country of Canada imposed on top of them--but they lost battles, and so became Canadians. Losers. The French in Quebec are Canadians because the British defeated them back in the eighteenth century (and they sure don't like that fact these days). Losers, right? The British-based population of Canada consists of two major groups: United Empire Loyalists, the people in the American colonies who sided with Britain in the war of independence and lost, and so had to flee to Ontario and the Maritimes; and immigrants from England, most obviously people who were doing poorly there, losers at the game of life who decided to set out and try again somewhere else. Losers all again. Throughout this century, people who have immigrated to Canada have tended to be people who have lost elsewhere--lost wars, lost land, etc. Losers yet again. My own ancestors came here because of pogroms in Eastern Europe that destroyed their homes--and would have preferred to go to the US but they couldn't get in, so they settled for Canada, poor losers. We Canadians aren't patriotic because we really only settle for being here, all of us, rather than being delighted by it--and we love to whine about it. Losers for sure, eh?

Summer games is the "real" Olympics.

winter games is just a knock-off.

Greece did not start it on slush.

  6. Why do you care?

  7. 4th at Athens? They were 21st.

They'll win a few medals before the games are over.

  8. I guess it's because Canada sucks.

  9. Canada does poorly in summer Olympics sports because Canadian universities don't have good sports programs. They also don't grant many athletic scholarships in Canada.  And there is no comparable competitions like the NCAA in the US, or the swimming leagues of Australia.

Beyond that, Canadians are usually economically conservative (i.e. cheap :) and are not willing to spend time playing in sports like swimming that don't have pay back (unlike hockey, football, or baseball).

  10. It's because canada is not really good summer sports.

  11. Canada tends to be better at the Winter Olympics vs. summer. This usually has to do with the fact that many people in Canada are influenced by winter activities and conditions more so than summer (unless global warming its us bad...^^)

We do great when it comes to winter sports, that our calling. So wait till Vancouver 2010.

  12. - Selected countries who have one medal: Colombia, Lithuania, Croatia, Vietnam, Egypt, Togo, Tajikistan

    - Selected countries who have won two medals: Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Algeria, Slovenia, Mongolia, Algeria

    - Countries who are similar to Canada (# of people, economy, democracy) who have won medals:

         Australia: 20 medals

         Netherlands: 7 medals

         Switzerland: 4 medals

         Spain: 2 medals

         Hungary: 5 medals

         Sweden: 3 medals

         Finland: 2 medals

I think Canada should change the name to Canadastan or Canadia.

  13. First of all, you can't compare Canada to the United States.  We might be neighbours, but Canada is 1/10th the size of the United States.  So if all things were equal, Canada would have 1/10th the medal haul of the States.

However, the start of this Olympics is especially bad. I think it boils down to the fact that the Canadian government simply doesn't put as much funding into the summer games as other comparably-sized countries (such as Australia.) Canadian athletes have less access to world-class training, sponsorship, and coaching because of this and it all goes on a downward spiral.

I think some of it is mental too. There is so much pressure on the Canadian athletes to perform well and when they start losing, the effect is exponential.

And yes, Canada finished 21st in the medal standings in Athens.  Canada got 12 medals.  The States got 103.  Canada's ratio (citizens:medals) is comparable to, if not better than, the States' for the Athens games.

    ...

If you want to compare Australia to Canada, we can do that too.

In the 2006 Turin games, Canada won 24 medals to the USA's 25 medals and Australia's 2 medals.  So yes, Australia does manage to win a couple medals medals at the winter games (most recently one gold and one bronze in freestyle skiing.)

In the 2004 Athens games, Canada won 12 medals to the USA's 102 and Australia's 49.  As our Australian friend pointed out, all the money goes to summer games for the Australians.

There were roughly four times as many medals awarded at the summer games as at the winter games.  It seems that Canadians focus on winter sport and Australians focus on summer sport.  Seems like a natural choice for each country.

Let's stop bashing Canada now.  Canada does just fine at the Olympics.

  14. Well, I'm not sure if anyone here reads sports illustrated, but they predicted 14 medals for canada, all in events that havent happened yet. So calm down, we'll win something eventually. just wait till sunday for the men's 8's rowing, we're the favorites =). So that goes to show that Canada can win medals in the Summer olympics.

If you're dissapointed, wait a couple years for the winters to come again...

and to TheTruth, there are a ton of things wrong with what you said. Canadians arent losers. Half of the native tribes sided with the british, half with the french. They chose to not fight all of the europeans. The french didnt stay in canada because they lost to the british, they stayed because they already had established multiple towns and had a large population living there. The british (who arent the only ones who came over) werent necessarily losers at life, it was just that canada was full of promise and wealth.

You can't call loyalists losers just because they didnt want to become savage war-craving people who saw violence as the only answer. The loyalists wanted peace, and canada was the only place that offered it, so they went there. The u.s., then decided they would attack the peaceful place to take it for themselves. Well, the canadians, who supposedly are "losers" beat the c**p out of them and burned down the white house.

And also, us losers up here seem to be doing better financially than the u.s.. Our government isnt in nearly as big of a debt and our economy isnt crashing (at least not as fast...)

So think a little bit before you call canadians losers...

  15. We always knew Canada sucks in the summer olympics. wait until the winter olympics. they're always good at those. and they should be great since their IN Canada.
