Question:

Canada to US border crossing documents

Will a perm. resident card and a valid US drivers license be enough to cross back into the US or is a passport/other documentation necessary. I know things changed after jan. 1, 2008. Also, the perm res. card still has the two year condition.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANSWER!

  1. You can use your passport but also you can use your birth certificate until the SUMMER OF 2009!

  2. Passport

  3. until the summer of 2009 u can get accross with a birth certificate and a drivers licence. i drove to the states a couple of months ago with this and i'm a Canadian citizen. if u are not a citizen or landed immagrant, u will need proof of your citicenship or some form of identification. after 2009 u will need a pass port to cross the boarder. check with the Canadian or U.S. government web sites to see what u need. if your card is still valid then u shouldn't have any problems. as of now a passport is necisary is if u are planning on flying across the boarder.

  4. Only problem with Charlie's answer was that he keeps referring to going to Mexico. You are trying to go from Canada to US (or vice versa I suppose).

In general, you should have a passport now to go anywhere, but there are still a few exceptions. If you are a US citizen or a LAWFUL PERMANENT RESIDENT, you need a passport for AIR travel, but not yet for LAND or SEA travel.

As a permanent resident, you should be able to use a government issued ID like your Alien Registration Card, along with your birth cerificate.

You will need a valid passport as of JUNE 2009 for all travel in the Western Hemisphere, unless they delay it again.

  5. You got a whole bunch of WRONG answers.   If you are travelling by LAND,U.S. permanent residents with a green card ( even the conditional one) do NOT need a passport or a visa to enter Mexico.  You need your green card and a photo I.D.  As a green card holder you ARE responsible to keep a current passport from your home country at all times...so you should have one. If you are FLYING to Mexico, you must have a passport now.  After June 1, 2009, passports will be required for everyone for all means of transportation.  People who answered that you can use your birth certificate did NOT read the question carefully.  You were not born in the U.S. so you cannot use your birth certificate to re-enter the U.S.  You must use your green card.

  6. you need a passport...

  7. if you are driving you can use a birth certificate, but if you are flying you need a passport.

  8. If you have a valid passport; its best you take that

if not, driver's license with citizenship card is good enough
