Canada to play Puerto Rico for bronze: Pan Am Cup – Volleyball news
Canada’s senior men’s volleyball team will be playing Puerto Rico today in a match that will decide the third place on the podium of the Pan Am Cup men's volleyball tournament.
Unfortunately for the host team, Brazil was able to hand out a defeat to Canada by making a clean sweep over them. Despite the fact that Canada lost the match in three back to back sets, the first two sets were closely contested. It was only in the third
set of the game that Canada lost heart and Brazil was able to achieve a comfortable win at 25-20, 29-27 and 25-16.
Canada’s star player, Gavin Schmitt, spoke about the South American team after his squads defeat and said, “Brazil is a better team right now. They are more consistent and more disciplined. It's a learning process right now and we saw what we need to work
on in this match.”
The team that Brazil will be facing for the championship title is the United States. The final of the tournament is scheduled to be played on Saturday, June 18.
Of all the three sets that Canada lost in Friday’s semi-final, the second set was the most competitive. It started off as a tug of war between the two teams and stayed intense until the later stages of the set with the score tied at 24-24. Brazil was able
to push past ahead and take the lead at 25-24 but Canada was successful in causing another tie at 26-26.  To makes things more exciting, the set reached another tie at 27-27.  However, Brazil was able to assert themselves and take the second set of the game
at 29-27.
After having lost the first two sets of the game by such close margins, the motivation of the Canadian team seemed to decrease in the third set of the game. On the other hand, Brazil was able to come out strong, capitalising on the momentum built by winning
the two opening sets. Therefore, it was fairly easy for Brazil to bag the third and final set of the game at 25-16.
It is yet to be seen whether the Canadians will be able to redeem themselves from the semi-final loss by winning the bronze medal against Puerto Rico today.
