Canada v Afghanistan – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Intercontinental Cup, 2011-2013 - 3rd Day’s Recap
Afghanistan 293 v Canada 130 & 176/6 (f/o) (62.4 ov) –
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748 lead by 13 runs with 3 wickets remaining
After ending the first day by putting 21 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets, Canada began their innings on the third day after failing to play on the second day as the game was abandoned due to heavy showers at Maple Leaf North-West Ground, King
City.
Trailing by 272 runs, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AS-Hansra-c1088 began the day’s proceeding aiming to overcome the target and build a solid partnership. The batsmen batted a partnership of 23 runs as they tried to toy with the Afghan bowlers who bowled exceptionally
well, making it very difficult for the batsmen to smack them around the park.
It was in the 21st over when Afghanistan grabbed the first wicket of the day, when Baidwan while trying to pull a short delivery by Hamid Hassan popped a catch at square-leg for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Karim-Sadiq-c70298 to hold on to. The batsman went back to the pavilion
after scoring eight runs off 36 deliveries.
Then on the penultimate delivery of the 27th delivery Hansra after smacking 19 runs off 47 deliveries was caught at mid-wicket by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mirwais-Ashraf-c1971 off the bowling of Hamid Hassan. At the time of his departure, the team had managed to post a tally
of 56 runs for the loss of six wickets.
However, just when Afghanistan thought they were not going to get any surprises from Canada, the late-order batsman Zeeshan Siddiqi left everyone awestruck by smacking a blistering innings of 52 runs off 70 deliveries. The batsman showed impeccable touch
with the bat as he took on the Afghan bowlers with zeal and confidence.
Perhaps, the Canadian skipper Hansra had made a blunder by sending in the 34-year-old http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hemayat-Ahmed-c62224 so late in the innings, had he come earlier, the Canadians might have been in a better position.
Nonetheless, the late heroics from the Canadian batsman could not save the team from following-on as the whole team fell after putting 130 runs on the board in response to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Afghanistan-c745’s tally.
Canada were then again put into bat, however, they failed to shine in the second innings as they lost their first wicket on the second ball of the innings when opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Gunasekera-c2231 went back to the pavilion on nil as he was given leg-before-wicket off
the bowling of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hamid-Hassan-c1524.
Another batting collapse was in the offing when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Birnie-Gordon-c59042, who after playing an innings of nine runs off 22 deliveries was adjudged leg-before-wicket
off the bowling of Hassan.
Nonetheless, Canada averted another disaster by the splendid effort of the late-order batsmen, who performed exceptionally well as they overcame the deficient and managed to take a lead of 13 runs against the very formidable Afghan squad.
With the efforts of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zeeshan-Hussain-Siddiqi-c98583 (23 runs) and Hamza Tariq (52 runs) Canada managed to post a tally of 176 runs at the end of the third day’s play.
