Canada vs. New Zealand: Second innings - Part 2 – ICC World Cup 2011 Recap
The Canadian pair of Jimmy Hansra and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ashish-Bagai-c46284 looked to get a partnership going as Nathan McCullum and Scott Styris took over the bowling attack for the Kiwis. The latter were having greater success restricting the batsmen and by the end of the 23rd
over the required run rate was at 9.74 runs needed every six balls.
Tim Southee and Kane Williamson were handed bowling responsibilities, as the Canadian batsmen began expressing themselves with the captain Bagai reaching his half century with a boundary. The partnership was now at 69 runs after 27 overs.
New Zealand bowler Styris was brought back into the attack, as Williamson continued his spell, but neither bowler was able to find the break-through. The resilient Canadians continued with their defiant partnership, but with the required run rate at 13.50
runs per over after 36 overs it seemed futile.
Nathan McCullum replaced Williamson and got the break-through. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748’s Bagai went big with his shot, but only managed to get an edge which Brendon McCullum comfortably gathered. A captain’s innings by the Canadian wicket-keeper who departed from the crease
with an impressive 84 runs from 87 balls.
The Kiwis brought Jacob Oram back into the attack, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 keeper Brendon McCullum had Cheema out for two runs and a wicket for Jacob Oram.
John Davison was the next man in and found the boundary with the second ball he faced, but with the run rate now at 16 runs per over it was not enough.
The 41st over marked the start of the batting power-play, as Canada looked to push on and get their run rate up. The Canadians went on the offensive, but could not find the boundary as often as they should have.
Balaji Rao departed in the 43rd over for 9 runs after he played his shot straight to long on and Oram had another wicket to celebrate.
Davison soon followed Rao back to the dressing room after McCullum, a name the Canadians were fed up of by this point, had the batsman run out with a direct hit. Canada was now at 213 for seven after 44 overs.
Another wicket fell soon after, as Southee’s return to the bowling attack wrought dividends when Harvir Baidwan drove the ball straight into Franklin’s hands.
The match was pretty much decided at this point, but that did not stop Canada from playing their shots. Both Hansra and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Khurram-Chohan-c1791 contributed a six each in the 49th over ensuring they went out with a bang.
Khurram fell to Taylor on the third last ball of the innings when his shot found http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 at cover and Ryder celebrated his first wicket of the match.
The match ended with the Canadians amassing a total of 261 runs for nine wickets in the allotted 50 overs, 97 short of the target set for them by the Kiwis. Brendon McCullum’s century was enough to earn him the Man of the Match award in what was ultimately
a comfortable win for the New Zealand team.
