Canada’s Nicole Zhang defeats Philippines’ Cyna Rodriguez by 4 and 3
It appears that some Philippines players have no luck at all. In a completely one sided match between Cyan Rodriguez and Nicole Zhang from Canada, Cyna Rodriguez probably played her worst game in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
The match started with a win for Zhang. Rodriguez completed the hole on par 4 while Zhang completed it just 3 strokes. This performance was repeated on all the holes and Cyna Rodriguez never really had a chance to stage an upset.
The match turned interesting towards the final holes where both the players completed the holes on par. This gave a slight hope to Cyna Rodriguez who had only seen Zhang completing the holes with a -1 score.
After the 9th and the 10th holes, where Zhang scored two birdies, the next holes were where both players played an equal game.
The 11th and the 12th holes were completed on par. It appeared that Zhang had lost the advantage that she had gained on the earlier holes.
However, Zhang once gained proved that she is the better player. On the 13th hole, Zhang again scored a birdie. This trend continued till the 15th hole and it was very clear that Cyna Rodriguez had lost the match.
The match was declared in Zhang’s favour and Cyna Rodriguez left the event. Zhang went on to play against Hyo-Joo Kim in the round of 16. She won this match after a tough fight and was selected to play in the quarterfinals.
Nicole Zhang is one of the surprises of this event. She played an average game in the qualifying stage and many experts were not sure what to make of her performance.
In the first round, the round of 64, Zhang faced Jaclyn Jansen from Illinois, US. This match turned ugly for Zhang and at times, it appeared that she will lose her chance of making it into the round of 32. Zhang won the event with a score of 6 and 5.
The coming quarterfinals and the stages beyond will prove to a great test of Zhang’s golf skills. She will face some of the best amateur golfers in the world.
