Canadian, Brazilian duos clinch success at Country Quota Playoffs of Silesia Open – Volleyball news
Two pairings from Canada and Brazil pulled off success in the Country Quota Playoffs and advanced to the men’s qualifiers at the 2012 Silesia Open, which took centre stage in Myslowice, Poland on Tuesday, April 24.
Canadian duo Matt Zbyszewsky/Chaim Schalk posted 2-0 (21-17 21-17) victory over compatriots Richard Van Huizen/Garrett May on the opening day of the tournament. On the other hand, Brazilian Harley Marques and Evandro Goncalves appeared in two matches and
finished the day with an overall 2-0 record, which confirmed their participation in the Qualification Tournament of Silesia Open on Wednesday.
In the Canadian Country Quota Playoffs, the duo of Saxton and Redmann earned a bye in the first fixture. Hence, they advanced to the qualifying stage of the Silesia Open without putting any effort at the CQs.
The second CQ Playoff brought Matt Zbyszewsky/Chaim Schalk and Richard Van Huizen/Garrett May in contest. The former duo proved to be better and clinched success in two sets. They claimed both sets with identical score of 21-17 and paved their way to the
Qualification Tournament.
Binstock-Reader and Hatch-Schachter also earned byes and went straight into the qualifiers of the tournament, which are set to take place on Wednesday.
Brazilian Country Quota Playoffs featured three teams but only one pair clawed its way to the next stage of the tournament. Evandro/ Harley earned a bye in the first fixture of the day. Next up, they went against De Paula-Hevaldo and defeated them in straight
sets. The game of ‘hit n run’ continued for 39 minutes and ended up with final score of 2-0 (21-17, 21-17). Evandro/ Harley were tagged as the winning team. De Paula-Hevaldo disqualified from the competition on account of defeat in CQs.
In the second and final match, Evandro/ Harley were challenged by Benjamin Insfran and Bruno Schmidt. Comparatively saying, the second match proved to be tough challenge for Evandro/ Harley. They managed to win the match but they received utmost resistance
from the opposite side throughout the match.
The opening set of the match came successful for Evandro/ Harley as they posted 21-16 on board. The duo of Benjamin and Bruno hit back aggressively in the following set and took sweet revenge from compatriots. They captured second set by scoring 21-15 and
created the tie in the match. Third decisive set featured great rallies and balanced action from both sides. The solid defence of Evandro helped his team to claim third set 15-12 and they won the match 2-1.
Harley shared his views after the match. He stated, “Evandro is only playing his second event and does not have a lot of points yet. But we fired it up and are happy we won.”
