  1. When you come back from Taiwan (not a country) to China mainland, you can stop over in Hong Kong and re-apply for a new China visa there.

  2. It's sort of an irony with the PRC.  They'll say you're in China if you're in Taiwan, but if you return to China from Taiwan on a Visa, they'll say you left China.  What the....?

I would not recommend trying this.  If you have a single entry, that is all you are allowed to enter for.  Once you leave the country and go to another country (which Taiwan is), you have used up your Visa there and it is no longer valid.

  3. Yes, but you need a visa with multiple entry permission. A single entry means to have to get the visa again.

  4. hmm. if you only have a single entry permit to PRC you may not want to try to re-enter on it.

to get into Taiwan with a Canadian passport you dont need a visa if your trip is 30 days or less, but you need an airplane ticket as proof that you are leaving if they ask. (which isn't too common, but can happen.)

PRC currently is greifing visitors over visa issues to clamp down on potential problems during the 'holiest of holies', the olympics. To the point of costing them business visitors by actively denying them re-entry. I don't recommend trying to leave the country and to go back.
