Canadian Child Tax Benefits.?

In the child tax benefits application it says that the primary caregiver should receive the payment each month. me and my boyfriend got into an argument today, he says that because he claimed me under his taxes that he is the one who should apply. when i look online, everything i find just says that the primary care giver should be the one to apply. help?

  1. The female in the relationship is normally considered the primary care giver for any children in the relationship. If you are living together, the fact that you have a child together makes you common-law. If you file the application properly, the Child Tax benefits will be processed in the female parents name, even if the male parent is shown as the primary caregiver on the application. This is referred to as female presumption.

    Tthe only way around this wuold be for the female parent to sign a declaration stating that the male parent is the primary caregiver. This declaration should be submitted with the application.


  2. It can be in either person's name but it is usually the mother who receives it. Most people consider primary care giver something other than breadwinner

    It is non taxable so it really isn't an issue come tax season
