Canadian Citizenship/Permanent Residency?

I am an 18 year old United States Citizen. I have a significant other in Canada and want to join him there and have always wanted to move to Canada. I am wondering what I must do to become a Permanent Resident or Citizen of Canada. I have heard that when one marrys a Canadian, then they aquire Canadian Citizenship status just by doing so. Is this true? If so that is an option. Otherwise, I am also beginning college as a Freshman this year in Wisconsin. I want to transfer to a college in Canada along with moving there. Can anyone tell me how I may go about doing all of this and where to even start?

MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

  2. You don't get citizenship simply by marrying someone.  However, it is sometimes simpler to apply for than other forms of immigration.

This is the official website about Canadian immigration.  Basically, as long as your spouse can support you, (and you meet the other requirements) you're in.

  3. No, just because you marry a Canadian does not give you Canadian citizenship too.  I have been married to a Canadian citizen for 5 years and I am still not eligible for citizenship.

Now to your situation.  It sounds like you would benefit best from a student visa.  You can find out about this and then download the forms if you are interested.  www.cic.gc.ca

If you marry a Canadian citizen you can apply for permanent residence in Canada.  It will take 1 to 2 years to complete.  After 3 years of permanent residence then you will be eligible for citizenship.
