  1. I have only cruised out of NY City once and I hated it.  Most of the other east coast port cities have much better departure ports.  The port is typical of NY, no parking, crummy.  I guess that's why some cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have moved their departures to Bayonne, NJ location.

We did the Canadian/New England cruise last year, but out of Boston.  I liked both Halifax and St John.  In  Halifax we did not take a ship sponsored tour, but just walked up to the fort in the center of town (all uphill) and then back down to the boardwalk at the harbor.  That port stop has a very nice boardwalk with shops and restaurants.  Then I St John we took a city tour which included a stop at the place where you can see the "reversing river" (you can only see it reverse if you stay there a few hours.  The city tour was very nice and I do recommend that one.

  2. Nova Scotia and PEI are incredibly beautiful places !  The terminal is not that bad to get to considering you're in NYC and they let you start boarding for a 4:00 departure around 1:00 if you want to get there early and just relax a bit on the ship (still think Carnival is the best).  Bet you're gonna LOVE the cruise !  Enjoy !
