Canadian Grand Prix: What to expect this weekend from Montreal?
The Canadian Grand prix of the 2011 season is going to unfold on the Formula 1 world in just about two days when the Free Practice sessions are contested on Friday, June 10, 2011.
The biggest question in the minds of the Formula 1 world still is that who will prevail in the Montreal semi-street circuit, keeping in mind all the regulation changes and the current positions of the teams and the drivers in the championship.
Will the Red Bull be able to take the lead in the Canadian Grand Prix? It is doubtful if we look at the 2011 regulations and, most importantly, how the other teams have managed to close the gap to them.
Looking at the points table of the 2011 Formula 1 season, clearly Red Bull are the leading team in the season so far. Apart from their race speed, they have outthought their rivals in strategy in the previous races.
If we look at the 2011 regulations, surely the Drag Reduction System will be the one to watch out for. The Canadian Grand Prix is the first of the 2011 Formula 1 season with a double DRS zone which will surely spice up the prospects of the game.
Already in the first six races of the 2011 season, the DRS along with the new Pirelli tyres have changed many records in the history books. With huge numbers of overtaking manoeuvres during the Turkish and Spanish tracks, the DRS is set to change a lot more
in the Canadian Grand Prix.
For the Montreal weekend, Pirelli is to supply soft and the supersoft compound tyres to the teams which are also supposed to play an important role on the race day and qualifiers.
Talking about the teams behind the Red Bull team, Ferrari have impressed more than anyone on the top row. In the last two races in Monaco and Spain, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has been right behind the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel.
Ferrari are expected to grab some points in the Canadian Grand Prix as they seem to do really well on the soft and the supersoft tyre compounds of Pirelli.
Alonso will be all fired up before the Canadian Grand Prix because he has a third and a second place finish in the last two races and will look to complete his position sequence by winning a race in Montreal.
If we look at the 2010 results, McLaren’s duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button took a 1-2 finish in Canada. The two Brits will also be geared up to challenge the Red Bull as far as they can.
McLaren are the only team that is closest to the Red Bull in the championship battle but still are 61 points behind the energy drink company. Surely, they will be eyeing to close down the gap before Red Bull win the season halfway through.
Apart from these top three teams of the championship, Renault are the team that have the ability to pick up some important points.
A lot can be expected from the Canadian Grand Prix because the 2011 regulations are expected to change the course of history of the Montreal track. Let’s see how it turns out.
