Canadian Grand Prix concerns grow as student protesters threaten the even – Formula 1 news
Concerns over the Canadian Grand Prix are increasing as the situation is getting worse in Montreal.
The Canadian GP is under threat of some disruptions because of a tussle between the government and the students have grown unpleasant. The issue can possibly be harming the Formula 1 event that brings almost $ 140,000 million in revenue to Montreal.
The protesting students have warned that the weekend could be targeted due to the ongoing dispute with the government. There have been almost 2500 arrests and the local businesses have reported a downturn in turnover as the protesters have been increasing
and deterring customers from going out to bars and restaurants.
The authorities have taken a notice of the situation and are taking additional measures to ensure that the race weekend goes according to plan and peacefully. The city’s main university students passed a resolution earlier this month which promises to organise
a weekend of disruptions in order to cancel the Formula 1 Grand Prix. It also added that that the event represented sexist anti-environmental elitist and economic values that must be abolished.
Recently Formula 1 was faced with an issue at the Bahrain GP with protesters making similar statements to disrupt the race. The issue in Bahrain was of a bigger scale as it dealt with humanitarian issues. The race got political attention and the issue was
grown out of proportions.
Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone went ahead with the race amid all the threats. Even after the race ended there were quite a few negative sentiments for Formula 1 to have gone through the event at a time like this.
The issue in Montreal may not be of the same measure but it can still be dangerous for anyone involved. The authorities have shown that that have taken serious notice of the issue. Whether the issue will stop the race or not will be clear in a few days.
The US authorities have warned tourists to Canada visiting Montreal that they could face unforeseen violence, vandalism and arrests due to the social unrest. Formula 1 have yet to show a response to the issue.
