Canadian Masters: Ian Bishop ousts Larry Wagner to reserve a berth in Men’s Singles semi-final
Canada’s ace shuttler Ian Bishop lived up to expectations when he surged into Men’s Singles semi-final after beating his lower ranked compatriot Larry Wagner in quarter-final match at the 2012 Yonex Canadian Masters Badminton Championships in Canada, on Wednesday, May 9.
Bishop, who has been placed at the top in Men’s Singles category at the Canadian Masters, put up strong show and advanced into the top-four stage by beating Wagner with a decent score.
The top seed was in full control and played mature badminton in the quarter-final battle and thrashed his opponent in two games by taking just 25 minutes.
On the other hand, Wagner played good badminton in both games but failed to dictate the pace at crucial points and lost the fight with a close score on the board.
Bishop remained impressive in the whole tournament as he played with complete control and continued his positive and winning run at the quarter-final stage as well.
The opening set of this contest was interesting when both Canadians showed strong performance by playing fast badminton.
Both men did not miss any chance to bury the bird with their powerful smashes and remained close until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Wagner tried to dictate the pace but failed to break the rhythm of Bishop who was in his prime form.
The top seed was the leader in the concluding phase of opening set and he easily bagged it with a tremendous score of 21-17.
The second game was an absolute thrill when both men put in extra effort to take charge of rallies.
However, they remained close again as no one could managed to get into a strong position until the mid-game break.
After the one-minute break, Bishop was the first to play attacking badminton at net but his rival was also playing aggressive game this time.
The score reached at the concluding stage without taking a comfortable lead. However, Bishop controlled the pace at this ending stage and scored the last points to win the set with a tight score of 21-19.
The top seeded Bishop managed to win this fight in two games of 25 minutes with a 21-17 and 21-19 score on the board.
