Canadian Masters: Val Butler, Lucia Gloria ease into Women’s Doubles semi-finals
Women’s Doubles couple Val Butler-Lucia Gloria Jimenez trounced Joanne Sullivan-Tess Tearoe to penetrate into semi-finals of Canadian Masters Badminton Championships on May 9, 2012.
The quarter-final encounter prolonged to three hard fought sets which took 41 minutes to provide final results of 21-13, 8-21 and 21-14.
Val Butler-Lucia Gloria were quick in start, slowed down in the middle and lifted up pace at the end to ensure their presence in second last round of tournament while their opponents stayed down in front of them in most part of the game.
In opening set of the match, the partnership of Val Butler-Lucia Gloria yielded best results by employing their unbeatable skills. Their challengers eased off after strong starts due to the flurry of power packed strokes by them.
Both ladies were trailing behind in the start but they geared up themselves and gained a decent advantage before one-minute break.
Later part of the game saw them making the most of their lead and Val Butler-Lucia Gloria bagged first match point with a distinctive total of 21-13.
However, story was entirely different in following game as Joanne Sullivan and Tess Tearoe stunned their opponents with strong backlash.
The Canadian girls dominated from the outset and at no stage their opposition did threaten to chase successfully. They launched an array of unconventional strokes and proved their class in both segments of set.
In first half, Joanne Sullivan-Tess Tearoe did not allow their rivals to relish the advantage of first set win and kept them grounded from very first shot.
They established an unassailable lead before the interval and raised their total at rapid pace in later part also.
Their challengers never came out of this huge deficit and surrendered after reading a concluding margin of 8-21 on the board.
The pressure mounted in third and finals set as both teams were locked in a tight contest with 1-1 match score.
Women’s Double partner Val Butler and Lucia Gloria, who teamed up especially for this tournament, showed superb coordination and amended their failure in previous set.
They sealed splendid 2-1 victory by registering a respectable total of 21-14 and reserved their berth in semi-final round.
