Canadian Men’s hockey team takes up 4-Nation Classic title – Hockey Update
The Canadian Men’s hockey team won the final match of the 4-Nation Classic against Chile 5-2 at UBC’s Wright Field in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 24.
The host team had an undefeated record of four matches in which Canada executed ten goals with just three conceded by them.
On the other hand, their female counterparts managed to win a bronze medal after beating down the Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) team by 6-1.
The Men’s side is getting set for their next major Internationals, the Pan American Games that are to be held in October in Guadalajara, Mexico. During the victory, Canada’s Mark Pearson had completed his first 100 International caps for his country.
He stated that winning over Chile was a great ending of the event. Despite having a hard time during the first half of the match, the team managed to take victory in their favour. He shared that the team’s next assignment is a European tour where Canada
will face-off against some quality competition.
The team’s head coach, Robin D’Abreo commented over Mark’s achievement of 100 caps and said, “Mark is just finding out exactly what he is capable of at the international level. He is an athlete that represents the kind of dedication and talent that we hope
to see more of in the years to come.”
During the play-off match, Brienne Stairs had scored two goals for Canada. According to her, winning bronze was as a result of team work. Recovering from the last day’s close defeat, the team managed well by coordinating together.
There was a similar celebration in the Women’s side, when Katie Baker, the team’s Captain also completed her 100 International caps for the country in the third place-winning match.
Baker admitted the importance of proving strong in the play-off match, which the team successfully did. However, the team still needs to build-up for the upcoming Pan American Games.
For the purpose, she believes that the series against Japan, this week, will be very helpful for the team’s development.
The Captain was very happy with her achievement of reaching the 100 cap milestone and expressed her pride to be a part of the Canadian team.
The Women’s National team head coach, Louis Mendonca commented over Baker’s role that her hard work has not just made her the finest player of Canada, but one of the best players in Pan America. According to the coach, Baker’s leadership will take the team
far in the Pan Ams.
If Canada takes victory in the Guadalajara event, they will secure their berth into the 2012 London Olympics. It will be interesting to see how well the Canadian teams do during the upcoming Pan American Games.
