Canadian Open is as good as a major
Canadian Open is the fourth oldest tournament in golf’s history after the Open Championship and US Open. It was first played in 1904 and after RBC took over its sponsorship they started rotating the golf courses thought out Canada. This year’s Canadian Open
is being played at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
The Canadian Open does not only offer more than hundred years of history but there are numerous other things to it. It has a very hefty prize money fund.
Apart from that, many big names take part in it even though the schedule of the event is pretty awkward. Canadian Open takes place right after the Open Championship. This makes it tough for many players to play in it, coming after a tough competition like
The Open.
Canadian Open may not be a major but all this gives it an atmosphere of a major championship. One may refer it to as the fifth major of the year. Players such as Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, and Gary Player all have won here at least once in their careers.
This year as well, the field is very competitive and tough. Many big names are taking part in this year’s Canadian Open. The likes of Hunter Mahan, Matt Kuchar, Jim Furyk and the man in form Ernie Els, are a few renowned players appearing in the event.
The presence of Ernie Els is a big one. The veteran has just won his second Claret Jug and will attract a large number of people during the event.
The fact that every year Canadian Open is rotated on different golf courses gives it the touch of a major. The Open and US Open are also rotated and each year, there is a different golf course for the event.
Ernie will be playing for the first time at the Hamilton Golf Club and this might be a bit of a disadvantage for him.
"I do not know if it is such a big disadvantage because a lot of times when you do not play a course, you do not know where the trouble is," Els said. "So maybe that is a good thing. You get your yardage, you hit it to your spots".
