Canadian Rogers Cup 2010: Ana Ivanovic rejected as wild card entrant
Celebrated as one of the best female players from Serbia, Ana Ivanovic has made a very prominent name for herself in the international tennis community. Ivanovic reached the world number one in 2008. Following this achievement, she made it to the finals of the French Open in 2007 and at the Australian Open in 2008, but she was unable to win on both occasions. Her true victory came at the 2008 French Open where she won her first and only Grand Slam singles title to date.
Glory for this tennis star was short lived, because since her victory at the 2008 French Open, her career as a tennis player has been going backwards instead of advancing forward. Right after celebrating an astounding triumph at the 2008 French Open, Ivanovic barely made it to the third round at Wimbledon 2008. Later that year, she was diagnosed with a thumb injury which troubled her game due to which she had to take a break from entering any tournament. This resulted in Ivanovic losing her world number one position to Jelena Jankovic, who is also a remarkable professional tennis player from Serbia.
After recovering from her injury, Ivanovic made her comeback at the 2008 U.S. Open. She was a top seeded player in this tournament but she did not make it that far as she was eliminated from the competition in the second round. When asked about her loss, the former champion said that she needed to play more matches in order to get back into full form.
Time proved her wrong as Ivanovic did not get anywhere near the top. She has not made it further than the fourth round in any of the Grand Slam tournaments since 2009 and her performance has gotten worse in 2010. This has been a miserable year for Ivanovic as she was eliminated in the second rounds at the Australian Open and French Open. She did not make it past the first round at Wimbledon 2010. Her world ranking has suffered a massive downfall and from being the world number 1, she has fallen to the world number 63 rank.
Recently, Ivanovic planned to participate in the Rogers Cup which is being held in Canada. A few selected tennis players were given wild card entries into the tournament, while others had to go through the qualifying round in order to prove their worth. When Ivanovic requested the hosts of the tournament for a wild card entry, she was declined and asked to go through the qualifying matches. This was a big blow for the tennis diva that was ranked as the world number one and a Grand Slam champion just two years ago. Being put in the qualifying round has been a great insult to her career as a professional tennis player especially when she has won the Rogers Cup four years ago.
Moreover, the tournament is said to have three wild cards and two of them are being handed over to Canadian tennis players. One of the Canadian players is Aleksandra Wozniak and the other is Stephanie Dubois. Dubois is currently ranked as the world number 125, twice as low as Ivanovic, and is breezing her way into the tournament without going through the qualifying round which is quite unfair for Ivanovic. What is worse is that the tournament heads in Montreal are using Ivanovic in the tournament’s promotional ad and she is still not getting any priority. The Serbian player has had a terrible year which has highly affected her career so it has been decided that she will have to prove herself before entering the Rogers Cup.
This tennis princess is considered to be one of the hottest female tennis players alive. She may not be at the top of her game, which has seriously displeased her fans, but she is still drop dead gorgeous which is something that still keeps her fans happy. Perhaps this is why the Roger Cup organizers are using her in their promotion, because if not her tennis then her face is definitely said to attract a lot of attention.
