Canadian Women’s Interuniversity Team roster announced – Volleyball News
Recently, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) revealed the 12-player women’s team that will be playing at the upcoming 26th Summer Universiade in August in Shenzhen, China. The competition is scheduled to officially run from August 14 to
21. The selected student athletes will represent Canada at the international competition.
The selection of players for the Summer Universiade has been made after a careful analysis and evaluation by the organising authority. In this regard, Interuniversity Sport Department kept in close contact with Volleyball Canada. Finally, the team roster
was made public on Tuesday, July 27. The Following players managed to find the place on the roster:
Jaclyn Ellis – Alberta University – Mississauga, Ontario Alexandra Lojen – Montreal, Quebec Beth Clark – Regina – Saskatoon, Sask. Tricia Mayba – University of Manitoba – Winnipeg, Man. Jaimie Thibeault – Motana – Sylvan Lake, Alt. Alicia Perrin – Trinity Western – Creston. Lisa Barclay – UBC – Brandon, Man. Kristi Hunter – Manitoba – Roblin, Man. Shanice Marcelle – Alberta – St. Albert, Alta. Noemie Lefebvre – Syracuse – Terrebonne, Quebec
Most of the players in Canadian Team come from the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Alain Pelletier from Laval University will be attached with the Canadian squad as head coach. He has vast experience in the volleyball coaching field and will be assisted by Lee Carter of Brandon University and Joely Christian-Macfarlane from Queen’s.
A total of sixteen university teams from China, Japan, Sweden, Belarus, Italy, Brazil, Slovenia, Ukraine, Poland, Taiwan, Canada, France, Russia, Thailand, Norway, and Hong Kong will participate in the Summer Universiade Tournament. Teams will be divided
into four pools, where each pool will accommodate four teams.
Canada will be playing in Pool C along with teams from Italy, France, Taiwan, and Poland. This is a difficult group as two teams with medals will be on board. Italy finished with silver-ware in the previous edition of the Universiade competition, while Poland
settled for the bronze medal.
Canadians will open the tournament by taking on Poland on the first day of the competition. In the first round of the tournament, each team is supposed to appear in three matches. Canada will meet Poland, Taiwan, and France in the preliminary matches. Canada’s
highest finish is in fourth position, which they claimed in 1997. This is great chance for Canadian team to improve the ranking this year.
