Canadian World Junior Camp Begins in Newfoundland
All the young hopefuls have arrived in Newfoundland to try and make it past the first cut on their way to becoming part of Canada’s 2011 World Junior Championship team.
Last year Canada had their streak of five straight gold medals ended by an impressive American side, who were able to squeak past the Canadians in what was an exciting 6-5 overtime victory in the tournament final.
Next year the Canadians will be looking to regain their crown, and it all starts in Newfoundland this week.
The biggest news is perhaps the fact that first-overall pick Taylor Hall has decided not to attend camp. The dynamic winger is likely to begin next year with the Edmonton Oilers and would not be able to compete in the tournament in 2011 if he were to be in the Oilers roster.
Defensemen Ryan Ellis and Jared Cowan have also announced that they will not be taking part in camp. Ellis is not obligated to join the team in Newfoundland because he is still eligible for selection, having already played in two tournaments. Cowan is suffering from an injury, and although he will be in Newfoundland for the duration he will not participate in any on-ice activities.
Second-overall pick Tyler Seguin has already joined the team, and will be leaving straight after camp to join the Boston Bruins for their pre-season activities.
The projected first-overall pick Sean Couturier will be vying for a spot on this year’s side, while Montreal Canadiens' draft pick Louis Leblanc will be trying to make his first World Juniors team.
The squad will rely heavily on Brayden Schenn, who has previous World Junior experience, and will be the only returning forwards from the 2010 silver medal squad.
On defence Team Canada will hope to welcome back Ellis and Cowan as their only returning players from last year.
