Four Canadian pairs and one duo from USA advanced to the men’s qualifiers through Country Quota Playoffs at the 2012 Brasilia Open, which is currently underway in Brazil.
A total of eight teams from Canada were registered for the Brasilia Open CQs but three of them could not make it to competition. Therefore, three matches ended up in forfeit and benefitted the present duos.
Saxton-Redmann, Binstock-Reader, and Hatch-Schachter of Canada earned byes in their respective matches and moved to the Qualification Tournament on Wednesday without putting any effort. Nonetheless, Zbyszewski-Schalk had a tough competition with compatriots
Van Huizen-May.
The two Canadian tandems staged a good action in the match, which lasted for three sets. Zbyszewski-Schalk proved to be better and posted 2-1 (21-14, 19-21, 17-15) victory over the rival side. It took them 51 minutes to overcome the opponents.
Zbyszewski opened the match with convincing serves and helped his side with an early lead. Meanwhile, his teammate Schalk came strong on the competitors and produced unstoppable shots. The duo of Van Huizen and May lacked coordination and failed to put up
with strong attacks from Zbyszewski-Schalk. As a result, the opening stanza of the match slipped through their hands with a deficit of seven points 14-21.
In the following sets, Van Huizen-May hit back strongly and managed to bring some stability in their game. With better digging and diving, they saved crucial points and remained hand-in-hand with Zbyszewski-Schalk on the scoreboard. The score remained incredibly
close throughout the second set, while Van Huizen-May finally hit the mark with a perfect kill and claimed the set 21-19.
The game entered the 15-point golden set, where Zbyszewski-Schalk once again launched power on Van-May. They finished third set with set with final score of 17-15 and announced match victory.
Success in the Country Playoff match allowed the winning duo to reserve a seat in the Qualification Tournament.
On the other hand, the US duos of Keenan-Mayer and Jennings-Strickland came into competition at the American CQs. The match continued for about an hour and eventually, Keenan-Mayer emerged as successful side. They posted 2-1 (21-17, 20-22, 15-7) win over
the pairing of Jennings and Strickland.
Keenan-Mayer made a strong opening in the match and influenced the competitors with nice attack and defence tactics. Jennings-Strickland suffered the set back in first set on account of frequent attack errors. Nonetheless, they came up with an improved performance
in the second set.
Both of the players on the team perfectly complimented each other and brought the game to an ever points by winning second set. Third decisive set was all about Keenan and Mayer as they totally whitewashed the country mates. They captured third set, which
led them to success in the match.
