Canadian aviation medical/age question:?

Question

For a PPL, a medical is good for 5 years if you're under 40, and 2 years if over 40.

What happens in the case of someone who gets his/her medical at 38?

Once he/she turns 40, is the medical valid for 2 years from their birthday?

its good til you are 43 - 'the validity period'  - it can be shorter if the ME recommends it.

6) Subject to subsection (9), the validity period of a medical certificate for a permit, licence or rating that is set out in column 1 of the table to this subsection is set out in column 2 if the holder of the permit, licence or rating is less than 40 years of age and in column 3 if the holder of the permit, licence or rating is 40 years of age or older.
