Canadian boxer Ariane Fortin terms decision against Mary Spencer unjust – Boxing news
Canadian boxer Ariane Fortin was defeated by Mary Spencer last week in Canadian women’s boxing championships.
However, Ariane seemed displeased with the decision claiming that it was unjust.
Executive director of Boxing Canada Robert Crete said on Wednesday that it is too early for Ariane Fortin to think of representing another country at the Olympics, after feeling dejected by the loss. The statement was based on Fortin’s decision of going
abroad to represent some other country at the Olympics.
He further elaborated saying, “She has to find another country that wants her, apply for citizenship, get the citizenship, make their national team.”
According to him, Ariane does not have dual citizenship like most other athletes which helps them switch places, and if she picks up an European country she will have to qualify for citizenship prior to moving towards the world championships in China to
finally earn her place at the Olympics.
Robert added, “I know that she's not too happy that she lost and her Olympic dream is gone ... (but) when you lose, you lose and you move on.”
On Fortin’s claims of unjust decisions, Robert said they were baseless since she and her manager did not make any appeal during the fight, instead they chose to do so when the fight was over. He further added that the committee reviewed the points and found
nothing suspicious about them or the judges, and that the fight was fair and square leading to Fortin’s defeat.
As of now, Mary Spencer will be heading to China to contest in the qualifying rounds for Summer Olympics. Mary is currently ranked as the No. 1 women champion in the world and has won the 75-kilogram class as well. She will be in London sometime soon to
represent women boxing debut in the metropolitan city.
Both the fighters are former world champions with a deep history of love and hatred. They were once roommates and friends, but as fate had it, they went on to compete in the 75-kilogram class last week in Glace Bay, which brought bitterness in their relationship.
Currently, women boxing only has 3 weight classes while men boxing has 12. Officials are of the view that with the passage of time, the sport will develop and grow vigorously especially after its debut in a city like London where women athletes are eager
to make an impact.
